Skye was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Skye is the oldest of four children. Skye was raised on a farm with her horses, pet dogs and siblings in the foothills of North Carolina. Skye found a passion for public service early, joining the Civil Air Patrol. While still in high school Skye embraced her love of flight and began to take flight lessons.

After high school Skye completed a degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University. During college Skye was chosen to complete the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative with the United States Coast Guard. Skye also obtained a second college degree in Business Management from North Carolina A&T University. Skye continued to follow her love for flight and was chosen as the first female candidate for the Wilkes Flight Program to become a rescue pilot with the United States Coast Guard.

Skye suffered a catastrophic training injury in the service. This injury resulted in Skye losing her flight slot and being forced to medically retire. Following 24 months of rehabilitation and multiple surgeries, Skye chose to go back to school. Skye applied to and was accepted to law school at Florida State University College of Law.
